I have been really struck and challenged since the New Year by these verses from James:

25But whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God—the free life!—even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action. That person will find delight and affirmation in the action.

26-27Anyone who sets himself up as “religious” by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air. Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.

James 1 (The Message)

The other day I was in a school and I was really taken aback by a response to something I had suggested, that this resource was ‘really religious’. At first I tried to defend my suggestion but I quickly sensed retreat was the best option! It got me thinking though: people out there don’t want religion. And yet at the same time so many are searching for some form, any form it seems, of spirituality.

A friend sent me something truly amazing recently! It was a photocopy from the newsletter of the Eastbourne Prayer Centre and it was reporting on a survey that has recently been carried out on young people worldwide:

The majority of teenagers and young adults in most parts of the world are religious, according to a massive 21-country study conducted by the German think-tank Bertelsmann Stiftung (BS). More than four out of five young adults (85 percent) are religious, and almost half (44 percent) are deeply religious. Only 13 percent say they are not interested in God or faith in general. “The perception that young people are less religious than their parents and grandparents is typically Western European and does not correspond to the reality worldwide,” organizers of the study commented. Dr. Martin Rieger, project leader of BS’s Religion Monitor concluded: “The assumption that religious belief is dwindling continuously from generation to generation is clearly refuted by our worldwide surveys – even in many industrialized nations.”

Isn’t it amazing, less than 10% of young people in our nation still go to church but so many still demonstrate an inbuilt awareness of God and a desire to pray!! It may not be as high as 85% but certainly our experience has always been that there is a hunger amongst many, many young people. Given the opportunity and encouragement to explore spirituality, we would say that more than half would respond positively and often it’s the neediest who are quickest to respond.

And isn’t it also interesting that as our society moves away from God, and consequently, tragically from blessing towards cursing our youth, many still desire to know more about God. But is it surprising? I would say no. As even young children are deprived of love, affection and security, they instinctively reach out further to find those necessities. It’s the way they’ve been created; it’s the way we’re all ‘wired’.

Praise God that He is always there, making Himself available and providing what we need the most. May we all ‘pass muster’ before God, as we ‘reach out to the homeless and the loveless in their plight’. And may we be very clear about what we have to offer. Not what many would assume – dusty old religion, a set of impossible to keep rules and regulations and boredom! – but what Jesus actually came to give us: a brand new life, life in all its fullness and all the fulfillment that anyone could handle!

We wish you a “Happy New Year!” and we hope 2009 has been a good year for you…

One of the special things about this holiday season is that it gives the opportunity to catch up with family and friends. If we can’t see you or speak to you in person, at least we can send you our love and blessings by card and letter.

Our latest news:

Jon and Beccy – we have enjoyed a good year, having adjusted to both Chris and Jess being at Uni. Our work with Turning the Tide has been so encouraging (please see the other posts on our website for more details).

It is now nearly two years since we left St. Luke’s and we are still loving the path that God has chosen for us, away from formal church. We continue to look to Him for our future in every respect.

Chris – having completed a highly successful year on placement with RBS in Luxembourg, he was pleased to return to Newcastle for his fourth and final year at Uni. At this stage it is hard work but he is enjoying it.

Jess – now in her second year at York, she is loving sharing a house with five friends. She lives life to the full: her course, church, Christian Union and an active social life. Jess’ heart for worship was recognised recently when she was asked to serve as the music co-ordinator for the Christian Union.

Some highlights from our 2009:

Choosing to go as a family to see ‘The Lion King’ in the West End followed by the real thing in ‘Howletts Zoo’, near Canterbury, in place of a holiday. Both experiences were outstanding and most memorable!!

In August, a wonderfully blessed weekend of ministry with all four of us leading a youth event – Surf the Wave – at Dalesdown. Over sixty – young people and families – were encouraged to reconnect with God and to hear Him for themselves.

The launch of a new prayer movement for the UK, focussed on the youth – ‘The Roar’. In March Jon and Beccy were involved in leading forty or so – families and youth – in our first event, held at the Ashburnham prayer centre in East Sussex.

A very special ministry trip for Jon and Beccy in April, to Ohio. Jon was invited to speak at a youth prayer retreat for 200 12–18 year olds. We wanted to give the youth an opportunity to lead and to speak for their generation; we were delighted as many took the opportunity to share from the front as God led them. For a brief, online taste of the retreat, see www.youtube.com and search “Beulah Beach Prayer Retreat 2009”.

In October Jon and Beccy blessed by a special week in Rome with our dear friends, the Sumptions. We were invited to minister to the youth on their church’s retreat weekend, in particular encouraging them to hear God speaking to them.

In February Jon celebrating his ‘half-century’ in style, with family and friends at the Sussex County Cricket ground.

Chris taking advantage of his central European location to visit the Nürburgring in July for his maiden Formula 1 experience before celebrating the end of his Year Abroad with a holiday in New York with Cesca.

Jess finding a house in York with a piano! Leading worship at CU. Joining the ‘Zamar’ Gospel Choir in York and being asked to sing a solo during their Summer Concert.

Charlie and Aimee (our nieces / cousins) remain our delightful focus on Tuesdays. Aimee has come to the conclusion that Uni is the place to be. Her best quote of 2009: “I’m off to Unibersity! I have my suitcase and my handbag. I’m off to Unibersity!”

Thank you for your time in reading this and for all your love and support through another year (by the way, in June next year Jon will celebrate 20 years in ministry).

Wishing you a very Happy New Year with every blessing throughout 2010.

Sending much love from us all–

Jon, Beccy, Chris and Jess xxxx

Greetings, after a long silence! We apologise that you haven’t received one of these updates for quite a while. At the same time we are excited about writing this now!

We could write with an update on our recent ministry, including for example the ‘Surf the Wave’ weekend at Dalesdown and our trip to Rome last month to work for the ‘Footsteps’ church there. Indeed we will do that very soon. But today we have another priority!

Whisper it softly but the season we have been going through seems to be changing at long last. After over four years for Jon and nearly as long for Beccy, struggling with low energy and other health issues, it feels like we are coming out of a long tunnel! This is not only in terms of feeling better and having energy but also that, in various ways, the Lord is revealing more of His purpose in it.

Recently we have joined a small group locally who are working out together their dreams and visions for the city of Brighton and Hove. This has prompted us to consider our own dreams and visions and as we have done this we have seen the hand of God more and more, as well as the way our individual dreams overlap so beautifully.

Beccy’s dream is to see thousands of children together, lost in worship; Jon’s is for a whole new prayer movement to rise up from amongst the youth. In both cases we see not just the Christian youth but many others, coming to a wonderful, new, radical, life-changing, and nation-changing faith in our Lord Jesus.

As we have thought and prayed about these things together, we have seen how these things will lead to the revival we have prayed for, and lived for, for so long. Friends, we can see the hand of God upon our nation and beyond!

He has led us to this point. More and more our ministry to young people is focussed on enabling them to connect with God themselves, whether it be through worship, through prayer or simply by listening for His voice.

We continue to listen to Him as well and one key area that He seems to be speaking into at the moment is THE ROAR, the brand-new prayer movement we have been involved in establishing here in the UK. He has been talking to us about how this should develop and also to the whole team about how we can come together in it.

As we close by sharing our prayer needs below, please would you first give God thanks, praise and worship for all He is doing today – thank you.

Specific Prayer Points

† For the long-awaited REVIVAL in our land!

†         For God to continue speaking, bringing revelation and strategy to His people;

†         For the two of us as we walk with Him, work out His purposes day by day and seek to follow His leading, especially amongst the youth;

†         For God’s anointing on our diaries and all our decision-making over commitments;

†         For the group here locally, pursuing God together for their dreams and visions;

†         For the small team (Chrissie, Maria, John, Beccy and Jon) seeking God over THE ROAR, that we would corporately know His leading, guiding AND BLESSING! as He reveals more of His plans for our youth and our nation;

†         For our God’s presence to be evident, especially in our home and family;

† For Chris and Jess, away at University.

Resources

We close with a couple of ‘YouTube’ links for those who have access to the internet:

The first is the song we quoted at the beginning of this:

Rest in you – Hillsong – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sr4_anyLMnY

And this is another, very different song that has been inspiring us lately:

Wake up – Leeland – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gecA4D8e8ek

Thank you so much for your support and especially for your prayers. We hope that, as you’ve read the above, you’ve sensed the excitement we have felt as He has continued to place His vision, for us and others, in our hearts.

We love and appreciate all of you and we continue to pray for you. We love to hear from you; please do keep us in touch with how you are.

Thank you for partnering with us in the Gospel; may you encounter and enjoy God’s richest blessings!

Jon and Beccy xx

Since Chris’ original phone call: “Dad, you must do something!” back in Easter, God has flung open all the doors of opportunity wide open! In just a few short months He has brought the whole event together.

Chris and his friend, Alastair, initiated the event at Dalesdown in response to disappointed youth hearing that their weekend away had been cancelled. (Alastair was aware of how that would have impacted him at that age).

We originally thought that we were scooping up some young people but God had got more in mind. The invite has been broadened to whoever has responded – young children, singles and even whole families! There is a real sense of inclusiveness! 60 of us all together and Dalesdown will be full!

Beccy woke in the middle of the night a few weeks later with the words ‘Surf the Wave’ etched on her brain; she wrote them down and promptly went back to sleep. The name has been confirmed by many a picture. Our prayer is that the Holy Spirit makes the waves for us all to surf on during the weekend!

We then heard that Jess, our daughter, had led Late Night Worship at her Christian Union at York University for the first time with her guitar. She had been amazed at the freedom in the worship and was greatly encouraged. Chris suggested she should join the Team for Surf the Wave. As a result we are blown away: both our children have chosen to join us in Ministry this summer.

God has been speaking to Jon a lot about it and has given him this verse as an overall title: “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”(Proverbs 4: 23). The focus of the weekend will be our hearts and how they connect with Jesus through relationship. Having seen how God enabled the young people in Ohio to hear from Him, the young people in particular will be sensitively encouraged to share testimony, words, pictures and Scriptures. We are looking to Him for everything; after all it’s His weekend!!

To sum up, Chris & Alastair wrote the following in the Surf the Wave Manual: “AND HERE WE ARE!! On the brink of something very exciting: a fresh take on the indescribable Dalesdown, with the chance to have a crazy amount of fun with friends and family, but ultimately take giant leaps towards the Creator, who has given us everything and without whom none of this would be possible.”

Reflections on Jon & Beccy’s God Adventure to Ohio

[3rd – 5th April 2009]

We have an amazing Father who knows our hearts and hears our cry!

As we look back at our prayer requests for the ‘Youth Prayer Retreat’ at Beulah Beach on the shores of Lake Eerie, He answered all those prayers!

We had prayed specifically for connections between us and Irma and her family. (Irma had invited Jon in India at the International Consultation of Prayer, saying ’Turning the Tide was exactly what they were ready for!)

We discovered that we shared God’s heartbeat for children and youth but also incredibly had been married precisely the same day!! In the warmth of their home God brought completion to a picture. Previous experiences had led to Beccy feeling as though God had thrown her up and left her mid-air. Back in March at ‘The Roar’ she saw in her mind’s eye the Father’s hands about to catch her. As she woke one morning in Ohio she knew God’s arms holding her close again.

Jon felt that God wanted young people to rise to the challenge of leading and speaking. An initial meeting demonstrated that God had already been stirring their hearts – their enthusiasm was that tangible!

Then at the venue, after a mix up in communication, we decided to stack and put away 250 chairs ourselves! We felt God was saying: this is not a spectator-event. I want my youth to lead, not just listen!

At the Retreat Jon encouraged the 12 to 18 year olds that they could hear from God. God did not disappoint! As the weekend progressed more and more young people came up to the front to share. Lives were changed in the awesome worship and deep, heartfelt prayer. Cardboard testimonies showed what God had done – we give Him the glory!

One young teen has been changed so much; having gained in confidence, she is accompanying Irma on the IPC Prayer Assignment to the headquarters of the UN in New York City in September!

To get a taste of the Beulah Beach Youth Prayer Retreat see the YouTube – link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3fZFB1oM8Q and read this email from a leader who brought her young people to the event:

How does one describe what happened at the youth prayer retreat? The best way I can put it is to have you close your eyes and see the following images in your mind:

Try to picture 200 junior & senior high youth (plus about 50 adults (sponsors, staff, etc.) sitting on the floor in the basement of the lodge at Beulah Beach. They are all sizes, shapes, and nationalities. The band starts to play a worship song. The bass booms, the drums keep a steady beat and the singers begin to sing well-known words. 250 people rise and start to join them. Have you been elbow to elbow with 250 people singing “come, Holy Spirit”?

The speaker moves into place after the time of worship. Suddenly we are transported to Great Britain through his accent. The assembled group doesn’t care — they speak English, Spanish, Korean, and Chinese. As the mike is opened for responses and comments, a line forms. Everyone in the line wants to share what they have heard God say to them. Again, those in the line exemplify the group’s makeup — adult, youth, child, black, hispanic, Korean — all with a story to tell.

On Saturday evening the room is transformed into a prayer room with seven distinct prayer stations — all relating to the seven last words of Christ on the cross. After worship and some instruction those assembled are turned loose to listen to God and then move around the room as He says. About 25% of the youth get started, but the rest are just sitting there, listening, crying, heads bowed, watching. When was the last time you saw 150 youth sit still before God in silence?

One of the boys from my youth group wanted to hear from God — he had never heard God speak to him before. He didn’t know what to do, so he sat there and watched everyone else. He waited and listened. All of a sudden his head went down and he sat there for 20 minutes before I spoke to him. All I said was, “did you hear God?” His reply? “YES!” He reported later that not only did he hear God speak to him personally, but that he liked it. Not only did he like it, but he wants more!

Gaze to the right. One of the adults are washing feet. There is a square on the floor made with green duct tape. The youth are writing their sins on the tape before they enter the curtained room, where they expect to meet God. Move around the room. A teenage girl is sitting, face to the wall, and crying as she forgives people and herself. Keep going around the back of the room. On the left sits B.J. Wheelchair bound, he is blessing anyone who will come close and kneel beside him. In one corner youth are writing on cardboard — one side is the before and the other side is the after — with God. As you move to the front of the room the band is playing quietly. Suddenly there is an intensity in their playing — not loudness, just three guys worshiping God by playing their guitars. In the center of the room a Korean girl prays and cries. Suddenly there is a ring of Koreans around her (4-5 deep) and they are all praying for her and with her.

I could go on and on, but this should give you an mental picture of 200 youth meeting God in different ways — in personal ways. Why do I invite youth to drive 7 hours with me for a weekend? Because I know they will meet God at the prayer retreat. What better use of my time and energy?! Do you know youth or children who should meet God? Send them to the children’s or youth prayer retreat — you won’t regret it!”

Beccy and I had the most wonderful time, with God blessing the trip in so many different ways!

In particular our host and co-leader, Irma, with her husband Joseph and children Ruth, Rachel and Katie!

We prayed for connections before we went and wow! Just one example: Joseph and Irma were married on the same day as us (yes, the same day in the same year!).

We met and were blessed by some truly amazing young people.

We had the privilege of ministering to and praying with Ruth and her fiancé Corey (they were married on 18th July).

We were blown away (and humbled) by some of the youth at the prayer retreat.

They truly rose to the challenge we gave them of getting involved.

We had effective and significant teams of youth: helping to lead the event, interceding for it and on the creative team.

MANY of them came to front during the weekend, to testify, to share, to pray and even to preach!

Don’t foget to check out the video ‘souvenir’ of the weekend – see above.

Notes

About 240 youth 12 – 18 year olds are expected to attend the youth retreat;

Ohio is five hours Behind British Summer Time;

This is an extract from the invitation to attend the initiative:
This will be our 5th year for the retreat. The past two years we have been running around 210 -240 youth (6th – 12th grade) (12 -18 yrs old). God has been meeting us in awesome ways each year. Two years ago Atnne Peik from South Africa was with us. He gave the youth a big picture of what God is doing through the prayers of youth. They left with the excitement that they were not in this alone. Last year Brad Jursak from Fresh Wind Ministry in Canada led the youth in knowing that they can hear God’s voice. They left with such a joy knowing that God will answer them when the call. They were also reassured of His great love for them.

This year (2009) I have been sensing that the Lord has been speaking the word repentance to me. I believe this next gathering the Lord wants to lead the youth into genuine repentance for themselves and for their generation, etc.

When we were together in India I felt confident that the Lord was directing me your way. I have continued to pray and still sense strongly to ask if you are available. “Turning the Tide” is exactly what we are ready for!

Thank you so much for all your prayer for our weekend at Ashburnham and for agreeing to stand with us. We had such a wonderful time and our God was awesome throughout. His presence was tangibly felt during ALL of the sessions; all of the young people present were touched and in many, many cases visibly affected. Most made contributions either from the front or during ministry times and it was such a blessing to see our prayers answered in so many ways.

It has taken us this long for it all to truly sink in, that something was birthed in the Nation at the Ashburnham weekend at THE ROAR. Words don’t really do it because everyone who was there has a story! What follows is but a fraction of what Father, Son and Holy Spirit did together amongst us all.

We saw many answers to prayer including one little one committing her life to Jesus on the first evening, her sister asking to be baptised in the Holy Spirit in the middle of the night (and her first experience of speaking in tongues actually waking up her mother!) and at least one healing (of an adult who’d had no relief from a bad back for over two years). We were also able to pray many times in the Prayer Centre at Ashburnham and to pray with some of their staff. These were such powerful times, truly awesome to witness and be a part of.

Very significantly some of the young people started to pick up the mantel which is to lead this movement!

Godfrey and Gill Birtill were such a blessing as worship leaders as they obeyed the Holy Spirit and helped with the birthing. On the Sunday morning Godfrey challenged the youth, especially the songwriters amongst them. “We’ve got enough ‘nice’ songwriters in the nation,” he declared, “but what we need is a few more NASTY ones!” Its time! TO RISE UP!

What an amazing time. We are SO THANKFUL to God and give HIM all the glory. We want to give the first fruits of praise to Father God and we are gathering feedback to learn the ongoing stories of how the children are hearing God and walking with Him, as well as what He showed them over the weekend.

We are also starting to work out the next steps for THE ROAR.
