Notes

About 240 youth 12 – 18 year olds are expected to attend the youth retreat;

Ohio is five hours Behind British Summer Time;

This is an extract from the invitation to attend the initiative:
This will be our 5th year for the retreat. The past two years we have been running around 210 -240 youth (6th – 12th grade) (12 -18 yrs old). God has been meeting us in awesome ways each year. Two years ago Atnne Peik from South Africa was with us. He gave the youth a big picture of what God is doing through the prayers of youth. They left with the excitement that they were not in this alone. Last year Brad Jursak from Fresh Wind Ministry in Canada led the youth in knowing that they can hear God’s voice. They left with such a joy knowing that God will answer them when the call. They were also reassured of His great love for them.

This year (2009) I have been sensing that the Lord has been speaking the word repentance to me. I believe this next gathering the Lord wants to lead the youth into genuine repentance for themselves and for their generation, etc.

When we were together in India I felt confident that the Lord was directing me your way. I have continued to pray and still sense strongly to ask if you are available. “Turning the Tide” is exactly what we are ready for!

With great sadness however they came to the decision that it was time for them to move on from St. Luke’s and they left the fellowship on 13th January. As yet they don’t know their next step but they are believing for God to reveal this soon.

Please would you pray specifically that he will be able to take some children and young people to this event? Thank you!

Jon is also looking into, and praying into, three overseas trips this year. The main purpose of these trips is to witness some of the amazing things God is already doing amongst children and youth in other parts of the world. The vision is very much for him to take some young people with him, with the aim that they too can experience and bring back some of ‘the fire’ to our nation.

Lunch time clubs have been a great medium for us to introduce young people to what faith in God is all about and we have been encouraged to see the numbers increasing.

Dear Friends

First and foremost – The team at Turning the Tide hope you had a wonderfully blessed Christmas and wish you a peaceful and happy New Year.

Thank you so much for all your support through 2007; we are constantly aware that we could do nothing without your faithful partnership through prayer.

Too often during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season we forget the purpose of the holiday. Here’s what some young people have to say;

“It is about giving. Did you know that when you celebrate Christmas you celebrate Jesus’ birthday? Jesus is the most important thing in my entire life.”…..Madison (9) Indiana

“Christmas means thinking about Jesus and all the characters involved in the story and also spending time with my family.”…..Lucy (9) England

“What does it mean to me? I used to know, but I’m not sure anymore. Jesus Christ was born on this day so it must mean that this is a day for peace and love. After 9-11, all I want for Christmas is for everyone to be happy because even Osama should be happy on Christmas (I hate him!) But if everyone isn’t happy I won’t be either.” …. Teisha (12) Germany

“I’m an ordinary teenager and just being real. Christmas is shopping and buying new clothes and shoes. “….Whittier (17) California

Looking Back, Looking Forward

Once again we had an amazing time at the last TTT prayer meeting. Jon saw a picture of small empty cups and had the impression that each of us was represented by a cup and we were cups which were ready to be filled. Maisie also had the picture of an “undercurrent” (- Definition: A current flowing underneath another current at a different speed or in the opposite direction). Her thoughts on this were that as much as we may think we know what is expected of us and what is happening around us, the Lord has his own plans and His ways are not our ways. Similarly the undercurrent is not visible to the naked eye but it is working in the background, often very powerfully.

New Beginnings have a charm that invigorates the spirit, the whole world looks at a new year as a new beginning, a fresh start to change things about life or start new projects or activities and resolutions – I must lose weight, I must set a bible schedule and so on.

One thing about resolutions is that they should not be too ambitious, but they should be idealistic: They should not concentrate on physical life, but they should focus on your spirit and its health. Godly matters are more important than fleshly. And sometimes priorities should focus on the messes in our lives. Wounded relationships, neglected business and family ties may require attention and resolution before you can enjoy the peace and abundance in living God’s promises. This year may we encourage you to think about ways you can serve the people in your life and the people of your community. Honouring God is far more important than, your weight, or your fitness. Openly confessing to God is more important than your Bible reading schedule.

We wish you the happiest of New Years. We urge you to join us in taking stock to see how we can best honour God in the months ahead. If we all set priorities to encourage one another, we will be a blessed people whose joy will testify to the world that God is our hope. Let’s join together in celebrating a new beginning of our personal spiritual lives in God.

We eagerly anticipated this New Year and the fresh start it brings. It is all about reflection too. We are grateful for what the Lord has done and shown us in the last year and are extremely excited about the many blessings that are going to be bestowed on us, as we seek to see our God turn the tide of what is happening to today’s young generation.

Comments and Suggestions

Your feedback is extremely important to us. If you have any news, a prayer request, compliment, suggestion or concern about TTT, please let us know; we’d love to hear from you.

And last but not least…

Here are the dates of our next few Prayer Mornings in 2008:

Wednesday, 16th January

Wednesday, 13th February

Wednesday, 12th March

All are from 10 a.m. until noon

At St. Luke’s Church, Old Shoreham Road, Brighton, BN1 5DD.

You’re most welcome to join us for some or all of this time.

Please would you pray anyway, even if you can’t join us?

Thank you.

Thank you so much for your support; it means a great deal to us and more importantly for the God we seek to serve.

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest in Turning the Tide; nearly 80 of our supporters have now signed up on our website to receive our updates via automated e-mail. We are encouraged to know that we have so many people standing with us as we seek to see our God turn the tide of what is happening to today’s young generation.

Please note that our website has recently been updated and that this E-prayer and all the ones we have sent previously have been posted on the website.

Answer to Prayer #1!

You may recall we said the following in our last E-prayer: In addition Jon firmly believes he has heard from God regarding the addition of a new member of staff, to ‘partner with him’ in the ministry of TTT. We have amazing news to report. Jon was introduced to a potential candidate, Sarah and travelled to meet with her. A date was arranged for us all to wait on God on the matter with some friends. God took over the time and instead we ended spending all the time praying for Beccy!!

When Jon spoke to Sarah afterwards, she told him: “I have heard from God on it already, I’ve resigned my current job, God has called me to Brighton and told me to offer my services to Turning the Tide.”

This is clearly another huge encouragement from the Lord and confirmation that we are in His will. Clearly there is now much more to pray about although Sarah does have a three month notice period to serve. Sarah is fully aware of the financial position and we have agreed to continue to seek the Lord on everything!

Schools Work

We are happy to report that the numbers at Blatchington Mill have gone from a mere 2 to a whopping 15 and this is due to our almighty God’s answer to prayer. Carl and Hannah for a while now have been praying for a breakthrough regarding the numbers at Blatchington Mill. We found out later that the previous low number was partly due to a large group of young people playing poker at lunch time, which has since been banned by the school. Praise God – Answer to Prayer #2!

Jon and Carl recently led an assembly in St Mary’s Hall (a girls’ secondary school). The presentation was approximately 15 minutes and the theme we were given was ‘Creation’ and we spoke on how ‘the seasons display the GLORY of God’. Overall the assembly went well and the feedback from the school was positive and encouraging. They are keen for us to continue to visit once a term and will be contacting us again.

A teacher mentioned that a Christian Union is currently running on Thursday lunchtimes at St. Mary’s Hall. She thought it might be welcomed if TTT could support it by visiting occasionally. Thursday is currently Jon’s day off; Carl has another lunch club on that day on the other side of town and has a ten minute window in between to travel across, but no car! Please would you pray about this?

Jon

Unfortunately Jon’s health has begun to show signs for concern again. The IBS that he suffers from often leaves him feeling tired and makes him vulnerable to bugs. He is currently recovering from the latest tummy bug and reckons he has been unwell fairly constantly since his return from New York (on 13th September).

Beccy has also been very unwell again; she has been suffering with a nasty virus for over two weeks now, possibly made worse by her pneumonia jab. She was showing signs of a chest infection but after a course of antibiotics she seems to be recovering.

However we continue to feel encouraged in that Father God sees all, knows all and can do all.

Charity Registration

After a bit of a stand still (due to getting the ball rolling with CRB’s for trustees), registration of the charity is picking up again. Please continue to pray for this.

The bank account for the charity has now been opened.

Finance

We continue to trust Jehovah Jireh, God our provider, for a breakthrough in our finances.

As most of you know, the original legacy which enabled Jon to launch TTT has run out and at the moment the charity is being sustained from Jon and Beccy’s savings. This obviously can not go on indefinitely and we ask you to join with us in prayer as we seek the Lord about the next stage in his provision, which now includes Sarah!

If you would like to make a donation to our ministry it would greatly be appreciated. We would welcome either one off gifts or regular giving. If you are a taxpayer then we are able to claim from the ‘Gift Aid Scheme’ and cheques should be made payable to ‘Family Foundations Trust.’ If you are not a tax payer and would like to support us with a donation, then cheques can be made payable either to ‘Turning the Tide’, ‘Jon Bebb’ or ‘Carl Smith’.

Comments and Suggestions

Your feedback is extremely important to us. If you have a compliment, suggestion or concern about TTT, please let us know, we’d love to hear from you.

And last but not least…

Please don’t forget our next Prayer Morning; it’s planned for next Wednesday,

12th December (from 10 a.m. until noon at St. Luke’s Church, Old Shoreham Road, Brighton, BN1 5DD). You’re most welcome to join us for some or all of this time.

Please would you pray anyway, even if you can’t join us?

Thank you.

Thank you so much for your support; it means a great deal to us and more importantly for the God we seek to serve.

Teens + 2007 was an amazing week! The theme for the week was Caleb and the Spies (Numbers 13 & 14). Using this story we taught the teenagers about God’s promises and we also looked at worship, evangelism and mission as main themes throughout the week in seminars and evening meetings

Teens + is one of three summer camps that are run by Children Worldwide with whom we work very closely.

As part of this year’s camp we had an afternoon of social action that all the teenagers took part in where we did a litter pick in Ashington village. This was received really well and the Horsham Parish Council was very thankful for all that the young people did in the village.

I have faith that this was a very significant week for all of the teens. A picture was given at the end of the week of a large bowl of fruit. This spoke to me and the rest of the team as an encouragement that the week was very fruitful. Some of the teenagers stayed on in order to become junior leaders of Teens camp which also was a real encouragement.

Dear Friends

A warm welcome to those who have recently signed up; we praise God for you. We feel encouraged to know that we have so many people behind us as we seek to see our God turn the tide of what is happening to today’s young generation.

Carl and Camp Reunion

Carl was away for the half-term week which included organising and leading a reunion for Teens+ at Dalesdown. He reports that the numbers for the reunion were good and you will in due course hear more about how that went.
PLEASE PRAY for Carl and especially for Phoebe who was unwell at Dalesdown. Since then the family have been taking a short break in Cheltenham.

Jon’s trip to New York

The long awaited journal has been completed and just to give you a bit of what to expect we have included a section on his stay in New York:

Having left it very late, just before I left, I arranged by e-mail to visit Metro Ministries, based in Brooklyn (www.metroministries.org). MM has long been a source of great inspiration to me and also the vision behind KidzKlub, a ministry I am involved with in Brighton.
Looking at the Subway map, I begin to wonder about the wisdom of visiting Metro – it will require three trains. Time is passing and I get a little stressed, not helped by misplacing some dollar notes.
I end up leaving after 10.30; that was the meeting time so I phone and leave an apologetic message on Bill Fergus’ voicemail.
It’s hot now. I locate 46th Street station fine, buy my ticket and find my first train, going in the right direction! At the first change, I have to walk between stations. I’m not sure, ask a lady who can’t help me, then find some signs. I realise the ‘subway’ track is overhead; need to be more observant!
I have deliberately left my camera and any other non-essential valuables behind but somewhat nervously I take a few photos on the K-JAM (phone).
Now in Brooklyn, the third train starts ok, then I realise it’s branched off in a different, wrong direction. I have to get off, go back a stop and wait for one heading to Gates Avenue.
Walking to MM seems ok but then I get confused and looking at the street map doesn’t help. I ask a large, older, black lady for directions and I’m nearly there. I find myself thanking her graciously and the Lord tells me, “that’s a powerful thing I’ve just done.”
I arrive at the building I was directed to by the e-mail, with another caller. We knock on the door but there’s no answer. We agree for me to phone and we are directed to the right building. As I leave, the guy says to me, “Be careful, this is a very rough area.”

I walk to the right building and introduce myself at reception, finally. Its 12.15. The other guy then arrives and does the same. I learn that he works for the Police Department!
Bill Fergus is a lovely, gracious man; he tells me the appointment wasn’t in his diary but pretends ‘he’s really upset that I’m so late’! He gives me a detailed and extensive tour and overall spends over three hours with me….

Please feel free to contact us for the Journal and any questions or suggestions will be appreciated.

Finance

We are still awaiting news of the registration of ‘Turning The Tide UK’ as a charity. The new charity may be coming on line just in time because the original legacy, which enabled Jon to launch TTT, has just run out. We are therefore seeking the Lord very earnestly about the next stage in His provision.
Currently our monthly income averages £8-900 but our outgoings (including our three members of staff and the cost of the office) come to over £3,000 per month.
In addition Jon firmly believes he has heard from God regarding the addition of a new member of staff, to ‘partner with him’ in the ministry of TTT.
Clearly the shortfall cannot be sustained from Jon and Beccy’s savings indefinitely but God has said He will provide for TTT ‘not necessarily in the way we expect’; we are believing for Him to do it in His way and in His time.
We know that the Lord will provide for us because we are in His will; in the meantime we walk by faith!

And last but not least…

Please don’t forget our next Prayer Morning; it’s planned for next Wednesday,
14th November (10 a.m. until noon at St. Luke’s Church, Old Shoreham Road, Brighton, BN1 5DD).
Please would you pray anyway, even if you can’t join us?

Thank you.

Thank you so much for your support; it means a great deal to us and more importantly for the God we seek to serve.

Dear Friends

We have more exciting things to report in this edition of our e-prayer mailing:

Into the Schools

As the new term starts so does our schools work. Carl reports that the lunchtime clubs have all restarted and that he feels encouraged by the young people who have started coming along clubs. Please pray that the numbers will continue to increase.

Children in Prayer

Just before he left for America, Jon attended a highly significant meeting in Guildford. An invitation had gone out to those that we could identify who have an interest in Children in Prayer in the UK. Twelve people attended and there was a strong sense of the Lord’s presence. It was a very exciting day and one that promises great things. The Lord spoke to us very clearly that this is very close to His heart:
We are at the start of a move of God and therefore a movement, so there is going to be and we need to maintain momentum and he will give us a new mindskin.
Watch this space! and keep praying for Jon who may be being raised up to help lead this group.

Jon’s trip to New York

Jon had an amazing time which included two days praying and worshipping alongside 300 or so national intercessors, prayer leaders and young people in the headquarters of the United Nations. He made some significant contacts and he believes he has received confirmation of much of his vision for TTT.
He is now praying through aspects of the trip as he continues to ascertain God’s will for him and for TTT for the future.
Jon has produced a journal of his trip, including the conclusions and prayer points coming out of it. This should be e-mailed to you and posted on the website soon!

These two gatherings were very significant and may have considerable implications for the future ministry of TTT. Jon feels we may need to employ another member of staff, in order to release some of his time, for his direct ministry, for furthering the vision of TTT and for raising funds. Please see the note on Finance below.

New Charity – ‘Turning the Tide UK’

There is a brand new limited company at Companies house with the above name and the application for charity status has been sent to the Charity Commission! This is a huge achievement; a lot of paperwork goes into the process of achieving charity status, as we have been finding out first hand! We are grateful to God that so far the process has gone smoothly and all the feedback we have been receiving has been very positive.

Finance

The new charity may be coming on line just in time because the original legacy, which enabled Jon to launch TTT, has just run out. We are therefore seeking the Lord very earnestly about the next stage in his provision.

Dear Friends

We have exciting things to report in this edition of our e-prayer mailing:

Most Importantly

On Sunday, 26th August, Phoebe Rebecca Smith was born; early reports from Carl and Linz suggest that all is well.

Thank God for the gift of Phoebe and for Gods Protection;

Please would you pray especially for Carl and Linz as they adjust to parenthood. May they find real joy in the midst of all the ‘responsibilities’!

Camps – Answered Prayer

That all the camps at Dalesdown went smoothly and that many young people left enjoying a deeper relationship with God;

That the Teams were united and felt encouraged by the outcome of the camps.

Jon’s trip to New York

Jon has been invited to join an International Prayer Initiative for the United Nations in New York from the 8th to the 11th of September 2007. He will be joining about 200 international prayer leaders and key representatives from every region of the world, including gifted child intercessors, to take part in a special prayer initiative for the United Nations and also for New York on 9-11.

Please pray for God’s mighty blessings on the nations as a result of this Initiative;

Pray that this will be a blessed time when God reveals more of his plans for Turning the Tide;

Please would you pray for Jon’s safety (he flies out on Thursday, 6th and back on Wednesday, 12th / Thursday, 13th). He is travelling alone and only knows a small number of the people attending; he is quite nervous about the trip but very excited and assured that its Gods will for him;

The cost of the trip will be at least £600; please pray for Gods provision towards this figure.

New Charity – ‘Turning the Tide UK’

We are making good progress towards registering as a charity and we hope to hear any day now that the limited company has been formed under the above name. Registering the charity will take between two and four months.

Give thanks for the progress so far and for Clive and Jerome who have agreed to be Trustees;

Please would you pray that things will continue to go smoothly with the registration process.

And last but not least…

Please don’t forget our next Prayer Day; it’s planned for Wednesday, 12th September (10 a.m. until noon at St. Luke’s Church, Old Shoreham Road, Brighton, BN1 5DD).
Please would you pray anyway, even if you can’t join us.
Thank you.

Thank you so much for your support it means a great deal to us and more importantly for the God we seek to serve.

Dear Friends

Welcome to another edition of our E-Prayer. We continue to be very encouraged with the way the work is going and excited about the possibilities for developing the work in the next few months.

Carl has been working hard in schools and preparing for camp. As you may know the first of the two camps is now underway and things are going well, you’ll find our prayer requests are mainly based on the camps.

Praise Points and Answered Prayer

The charity set up has made good progress and we are confident that soon we will be a registered charity
The camps have started without any hitches

Requests

For Joolz Mathews as she is leading the camp
For Carl and Nigel as they head up the teaching – for inspiration and guidance in their preparation
For each of the teenagers who will be coming to encounter God and get deeper into their relationship with him
For the young people to recognise and use their gifting
For Unity within the team
For the team to have energy and passion
For safety

Thank you so much for your support it means a great deal to us and more importantly for the God we seek to serve.
